注意：在其他语境中，这个短语可能表示“已故的卡夫卡”。在死去者的姓名、身份前加the late，存有敬意，多表示新近亡故。

注意：①由privation的词源，可联系到private与deprive。②比较semblance与resemblance。③比较resurrection与resurgence的词源。

注意：作定语时，用形容词sexual还是名词sex，无理可循，全凭习惯，要注意观察。这里还要定冠词。本例中，改sexual为sex，亦可。

5. an exactly calibrated instrument
一件精密校准的仪器
注意：calibrate源自calibre。《大牛津》2版和《韦氏大学》11版都说calibre源自阿拉伯语的qālib，但对qālib有不同的翻译，前者说是mould for casting metal（浇铸金属的模范），后者说是shoemaker’s last（鞋楦）。可惜我外语学得太少，不懂阿拉伯语，无以判别。
