《无羊》 Without Sheep

谁谓尔无羊？ Who says no sheep you've got?
三百维群。 You've three hundred in a flock.
谁谓尔无牛？ Who says no ox you get?
九十其犉。 You've ninety cattle in the cowshed.
尔羊来思， When your flock's in sight,
其角濈濈。 The horns are like an army to fight.
尔牛来思， When your herd appears,
其耳湿湿。 Dance in the air their ears.

或降于阿， Some run down from the mound.
或饮于池， Some drink at the pond.
或寝或讹。 Some awake,some asleep.
尔牧来思， Here you herd your sheep.
何蓑何笠， You wear rain cape and straw hat
或负其餱。 With solid food on your back.
三十维物， Runs in thirty colors your livestock
尔牲则具。 More than enough to sacrifice the god.

尔牧来思， Herding your livestock here,
以薪以蒸， you cut firewood near,
以雌以雄。 And hunting birds that appear.
尔羊来思， When your flock's on the horizon
矜矜兢兢， Cautious lambs follow in dozen.
不骞不崩。 They never get lost or go astray
麾之以肱， Once you wave them the way
毕来既升。 to the hill-top no one will delay.

牧人乃梦， There you dream a daydream.
众维鱼矣， Grasshoppers become fish in stream
旐维旟矣， Turns into a hawk the snake design.
大人占之； You ask the diviner to explain:
众维鱼矣， Grasshopper turning into fish is a lucky sign
实维丰年； It means you will harvest a good gain.
旐维旟矣， A good omen snake becoming hawk does bear
室家溱溱。 You will have one more new heir.

是谁说你没有羊?
一群就有三百只。
是谁说你没有牛?
七尺高的有九十。
你的羊群到来时，
只见羊角齐簇集。
你的牛群到来时，
只见牛耳摆动急。

有的奔跑下高丘，
有的池边作小饮，
有的睡着有的醒。
你到这里来放牧，
披戴蓑衣与斗笠，
有时背着干粮饼。
牛羊毛色三十种，
牺牲足够祀神灵。

你到这里来放牧，
边伐细柴与粗薪，
边猎雌雄天上禽。
你的羊群到来时，
羊儿小心紧随行，
不走失也不散群。
只要轻轻一挥手，
全都跃登满坡顶。

牧人悠悠做个梦，
梦里蝗虫化作鱼，
旗画龟蛇变为鹰。
请来太卜占此梦：
蝗虫化鱼是吉兆，
预示来年丰收庆；
龟蛇变鹰是佳征，
预示家庭添人丁。
