品牌崇拜 brand worship

元宵节的花灯还未撤去，众多商家就开始为情人节"商战"摩拳擦掌了。不少商家抢占"浪漫商机"，纷纷营造情人节浪漫氛围，推出各种情侣套票、套餐等优惠活动，吸引消费者前来。各种促销活动让人眼花缭乱。

Quanjude, a 145-year-old restaurant chain known for Peking roast duck, also promoted Valentine's Day package menus this year in its branches in Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao, an eastern coastal city widely known for brand worship.

至今已有145年历史的全聚德北京烤鸭店今年也在北京、上海、和以品牌崇拜而闻名的东部沿海城市青岛的分店推出了"情人节套餐。

在上面的报道中，brand worship就是指"品牌崇拜"。所谓品牌崇拜，是指建立在消费者视作自己拥有该品牌的某些特权(话语权、建议权等)的基础上，对品牌的忠实有如宗教信徒般的关系。这类消费者将该品牌提供的一系列服务，包括物质、精神、个性等，自觉向其他消费者推介，同时还积极参加该品牌举办的各种活动，并为自己是某品牌的追随者而骄傲。

Worship在这里意思是"崇拜"，类似的用法还有hero worship（英雄崇拜），nature worship（对自然的崇拜）。Susan的父亲很担心她worship idols blindly（盲目崇拜偶像），或者陷入money worship/ mammonism（拜金主义）。最近她工作很忙，没有时间出去belly-worship（大吃大喝）。

Worship还可以用来指宗教礼拜，比如每个"礼拜天"，教徒必须去place of worship（宗教场所）参加the order of worship（礼拜仪式）。此外，它还可以表示"祭拜"。清明节时，we return home today to worship grandfather（我们回家乡祭拜外公）。

我只能骑驴看帐本走着瞧了。

这个词汇的来源和音乐有关系。它原来指的是那些会弹钢琴或某种乐器，但是却不会看五线谱的人。每当他们要弹奏某个曲调时，他们只能凭着上一回听到的记忆来弹。可是play it by ear现在已经成为日常用语了，意思是做一件事不是事先有计划的，而是走着瞧，临时决定，与汉语中的那句歇后语"骑驴看帐本--走着瞧"有一些相似。

例如，你被请到某处去讲话，可是又没有时间准备。你就可以对听众说：
"I haven't had a chance to prepare any notes so all I can do is start talking and play it by ear."

Where is the father?

Two brothers were looking at some beautiful paintings.

"Look," said the elder brother. "How nice these paintings are!"

"Yes," said the younger, "but in all these paintings there is only the mother and the children. Where is the father?"

The elder brother thought for a moment and then explained, "Obviously he was painting the pictures."
