Lesson 11 Penguins 企鹅

These cute seabirds have wings,but they cannot fly.
这些可爱的海鸟拥有翅膀，却不支飞翔。
They wear a black or blue-gray overcoat,and they have a white belly,
a pair of short legs,and two wings that serve as flippers.
它们身着一袭黑色或蓝灰色的大衣，露着白白的肚皮，长着一双短腿，两个翅膀就是它们的鳍。
These are 18 species of them.
它们共有18个种类，要看头和颈才能区别开来。
We must look at their heads and necks to tell one species from another.
有的长着一对黄色的长眉，有的留着摇滚歌星的发式，有的颊上长着柠檬黄或橙黄色的斑纹。
Some have a pair of long.yellow eyebrows,some have a rock star hairstyle.
还有的什么特别的斑纹都没有。在陆地上，这些海鸟一副笨拙的样子。
some have lemonyellow and orange marking on their cheeks,
and some just have no special markings at all.
颊上长着柠檬黄或橙黄色的斑纹。还有的什么特别的斑纹都没有。
When these seabirds walk on land,they look clumsy.

Yet,when they dive into the water.they become excellent swimmers!
可一跃入水中，它们就成了游泳健将！
Most of them live in places covered by snow and ice all year round
in the Southern Hemisphere,
它们大部分都生活在南半球常年被冰雪覆盖的地区，
but some are found in warmer areas near the equator.What are they?
也有一些出现在赤道附近更温暖的地区。它们是什么呢？
These cute seabirds are penguins!
这些可爱的海鸟就是企鹅！
King penguins and emperor penguins are the two largest types in their family.
王企鹅和皇企鹅是最大的两种企鹅。
King penguins can reach a height of 38 inches,
and emperor penguins can be 48 inches tall.
王企鹅可以长达38英寸，皇企鹅的身高可以达到48英寸。
The smallest penguin is the little blue penguin from Australia and New Zealand
when it stands straight,it is just about 16 inches tall.
最小的企鹅是澳大利亚与新西兰的小蓝企鹅——直立时身高只有16英寸。
Big penguins have some advantages over their smaller relatives -
big penguins can stay warm easier so they can live in a colder climate.
与体型小的亲戚们相比，大企鹅享有一些得于独厚的优势——大企鹅潜水可以更深。
big penguins can live deeper and stay underwater longer
so they can catch food far below the surface.
在水下停留时间也更长，因此能够在深处觅食。

The Polar Aquarium

I visited the Polar Aquarium today.
我今天参观了极地水族馆。
Is it like a zoo of polar animals?
就是像极地动物园那样的吗？
Almost.There are a lot of polar animals sea birds,such as seals,
差不多吧。那儿有很多极地动物和海洋鸟类，像海豹、鲸鱼和企鹅什么的。
whales and penguins,People don't get much chance of seeing them.
人们很难有机会见到这些动物。
It must have been fun seeing those unusual animals and birds.
见到这些奇特的动物一定很有意思。

I learned quite a lot about those animals and polar areas.

I'm thinking of my kids there one of these days.
