Lesson 2 Deep-sea Diving 深海潜水

Some people enjoy deep-sea diving as a sport.
有些深海潜水者出于爱好而喜欢这项运动。
But for most divers it is a way of reaching jobs that must be done under water.
但对于大多数潜水员来说，这是在水下工作的一种方式。
For Example.deep-sea divers locate sunken ships.
例如，深海潜水员找到沉船，
They help build under-water foundations for bridges and piers.
协助修建桥梁和码头的水下地基。
Sometimes,divers recover great treasures of gold and silver
and other valuable cargoes from the holds of sunken ships.
潜水员有时可以从沉船的货仓中打捞出大量的金银财宝和其他价值连成城的货物。
A diver faces danger each time he goes under water.
每次下水，潜水员都要面对危险，
His life depends on a steady supply of air
pumped to him through a hose from the surface.
他的生命要依赖一条软管从水面不断地泵送空气给他。
He usually wears a bulky waterproof suit
and a metal helmet that make it difficult to move about.
他通常穿着笨重的防水服，戴着金属头盔，活动不便。
Often a diver must grope his way through icy water
filled with mud and silt that make it hard see.
潜水员常常要在充满泥浆和淤泥，因而能见度极差的冰冷的水中摸索前行。
Swift currents may hurl him against an obstacle and strangle his air hose.
迅猛的水流可能会把他甩到障碍物上，缠绕传输空气的软管。
If a diver rises to the surface too rapidly,
he may suffer from a sickness called the bends.
如果潜水员上升速度太快 ，还可能会得上减压病。
